Podcasts have become more and more popular today. A podcast is basically the name that is given for a video or audio file that is available online through a syndication service.

The term podcast is derived from the brand iPod and from the word broadcast. One of the earliest portable audio file players that has integrated a system for podcast downloading from a computer is the iPod. A lot of people believe that the iPod was the one that popularized the idea of podcasting. This boom in podcasting resulted in many other devices that can handle podcasts to be developed. Today the origin of word podcast has been reformed to be an acronym that stands for Portable On Demand broadcast.

Technically, the files, the format and the content of a podcast are not that different from the other video and audio files that are available through having an online stream or downloading online. The content of podcasts can be anything. Generally, podcasts serve as internet radio shows that people can download on to their computer or portable audio player to listen to. They usually focus on specific areas of interest that would reach specialized audiences. Today, more and more mainstream radio shows offer up episodes in podcast format for listeners who missed the show or to reach a new audience.

Podcasts are different from the other downloadable files online in the sense that they can be automatically downloaded by a user who has subscribed to a certain podcast as they become available. Users can also easily find the podcasts that are relevant and interesting to them through a specialized structure. There are central repositories of podcasts where users could browse through numerous podcasts by subject area. They could also see how many subscribers they have and what they have to say about a particular podcast. This allows the subscribers and the users to make their decision as to which podcast they would like to listen to or watch.

Individuals who record podcasts usually do so to get their songs heard or videos seen by a wider audience. There are also some people who create podcasts to share and express their political views. Many who want to give out tips or other helpful advice and information also choose to record podcasts that other people can listen to. Regardless of the reason why a particular podcast has been recorded, the whole concept of podcasting has taken over the radio by storm and has given a chance to almost everybody to have a voice about anything.
